The Bigge office was one of the administrative districts that the Prussians set up in the 19th century in connection with municipal reforms. The office was created around 1837 and existed until 1975. In that year it was divided between the cities of Bestwig, Brilon, Olsberg and Winterberg. The city of Olsberg became the legal successor .

history

The Bigge office emerged from the old Bigge mayor's office. This was expanded in 1837 by Altenbüren, Eßhoff and Grimlinghausen. This latter place later became an unofficial community. In 1969 the places Bigge and Olsberg were combined to form the town of Bigge-Olsberg.

The office included the communities Altenbüren , Antfeld , Assinghausen , Bigge , Bruchhausen , Brunskappel , Elleringhausen , Elpe , Eßhoff , Grimlinghausen , Helmeringhausen , Olsberg , Siedlinghausen , Wiemeringhausen and Wulmeringhausen . It belonged to the then Brilon district . From a geographical point of view, it covered large parts of the Scharfenberg hill country, the Ramsbecker heights and the Assinghauser Grund .

In 1864 Bigge had 7,681 inhabitants. By 1939 that number had risen to 10,782. Due to the flow of refugees after 1945, their number grew to 15,269 by 1950. Eleven years later (1961) the number of inhabitants had fallen again to 15042. Five years later, in 1966, Bigge had a population of 16146 people over an area of 143.11 km². In 1961, 6,796 people worked here, of which 22.1% were employed in agriculture and forestry, 49.2% in manufacturing, and the rest in other occupations. In 1961, 13,296 declared themselves Catholics and 1683 as Protestant Christians.

The office did not have its own coat of arms. It existed until 1975 and was largely absorbed by the city of Olsberg . Individual communities were incorporated into the towns of Brilon (Eßhoff, Altenbüren) and Winterberg (Siedlinghausen) as well as the community of Bestwig (Grimlinghausen).
