Anatrachyntis Badia is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cosmopterigidae (Cosmopterigidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 11 millimeters. They resemble Anatrachyntis rileyi , but differ from this species in the reddish brown basic color of the forewings and the lack of the inner line on the fringed scales below the apex . In addition, the moths have gray hind wings. The first three segments of the abdomen are dorsally pale yellow, the remaining segments are gray.
The genital armature of the males is similar to that of Anatrachyntis rileyi , but differs in the slimmer, parallel-walled left brachium, which does not have a bulbous apex and the valves that gradually widen from the base .
The female genital fittings are also similar to that of Anatrachyntis rileyi . The sterigma is long and tapers distally . It protrudes more from the fold between the 7th and 8th sternite . The ductus bursae is slightly longer than the corpus bursae .
distribution
Anatrachyntis badia is distributed in France , Spain , the Canary Islands ( Tenerife ), in the south of the USA ( Florida to California ) and in Hawaii . The species was introduced in Holland and Great Britain . According to Fauna Europaea, the species is also found on Gibraltar , Greece (mainland), Italy (mainland), Malta , Sicily and Spain.
biology
The caterpillars develop mainly on dead plant material. They were also found on pine cones that were infested by European borers of the genus Dioryctria . The caterpillars were also found on rust- infested pine cones and various fruits ( limes , grapefruit ( Citrus maxima ), bananas ( Musa )), cabbage ( Brassica ), coconut palm flowers ( Cocos nucifera ), elm leaves ( ulm ), etc. The species forms two generations, in southern areas it is up to three generations a year.
