Andokides (potter)
Andokides ( Greek Ἀνδοκίδης ) was a Greek potter , active around 540-510 BC. In Athens .
life and work
Andokides is known for nine signed vessels, six abdominal amphorae, a neck amphora, an eye bowl and a calyx crater, other works can be ascribed to him due to the shape. He probably learned his trade in Exekias' workshop . He stands at the transition from black to red-figure vase painting , his vases have been painted using both vase techniques. So-called bilinguals, vases that are decorated with black figures on one side and red figures on the other, are particularly characteristic. This includes a signed eye cup in Palermo and six unsigned abdominal amphorae. These were painted by two painters, the black-figure Lysippides painter and the red-figure Andokides painter , although it was repeatedly assumed that these were just two different ways of drawing by the same painter. Other painters from the circle of Exekias as well as Psiax and Epiktetos worked in the workshop of Andokides .
In addition to the vases, Andokides also has a consecration on the Athens Acropolis ; Here he consecrated a bronze statue with the potter Mnesiades , the base of which has been preserved with an inscription ( IG ² No. 627): " Μ] ΝΕΣΙΑΔΕΣ ΚΕΡΑΜΕΥΣ ΜΕ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΔΟΚΙΔΕΣ ΑΝΕΘΕΚΕΝ ". This consecration, one of the few potters on the Acropolis, shows Andokides' high social prestige.
Andokides is possibly also associated with Andokides, a favorite inscription on a black-figure hydria by the Taleides painter around 550 BC. Meant (Paris, Louvre F 38).
