André Gelpke (born March 15, 1947 in Beienrode ) is a German photographer and lecturer . He is considered one of the leading author photographers in Europe. In the 1970s, André Gelpke, along with Heinrich Riebesehl and Michael Schmidt, was one of the pioneers of the medium of photography as art in Germany.

Life

André Gelpke began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer at an early age with the aim of becoming an architect . After his apprenticeship, he attended a two-year day school with a technical diploma , did an internship with an advertising photographer in 1966/67 and in 1967 made an extensive journey through the Orient, Egypt and Sudan. In June of the same year he got caught up in the turmoil of the six-day war between Israel and the Arab states in Beirut and later in Syria . Completely penniless and seriously ill, he was able to save himself to Turkey with the help of a doctor . After his military service in 1968 he studied from 1969 to 1975 at the Folkwang School in Essen under Otto Steinert . His diploma thesis deals with the then meaningful hippie trips by VW bus to Afghanistan , India and Nepal .

In 1975 Gelpke founded the Visa agency in Essen together with his former classmates Rudi Meisel and Gerd Ludwig . In 1979 he resigned from the agency because of his view of a conflict between commercial photography and his efforts to pursue "artistic" author photography. He then earned his living through exhibitions and international workshops as well as extensive world trips. From 1980 to 1990 he lived in Düsseldorf. 1987/88 he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund and at the College of Design in Zurich . In 1990 he went to Switzerland, after being appointed to Zurich in 1989, where he taught until 2012 as a professor of photography at the Zurich University of the Arts. From 2006 to 2008 he held an additional teaching position at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen .

André Gelpke lives with his family in Zurich and Grattino ( Liguria ) in Italy.
