André Hodeir

André Hodeir (* 21st January 1921 in Paris ; † 1. November 2011 in Versailles , near Paris ) was a French jazz - author , novelist , composer , arranger , bandleader and violinist .

life and work

Andre Hodeir studied at the Paris Conservatory with Olivier Messiaen, among others . He also played the violin in cafés, from 1942 (as Claude Laurence) in the André Ekyan sextet . From the second half of the 1940s he arranged, first for Django Reinhardt (1946) and Don Byas (1949), then also for James Moody (1951), Bernard Peiffer (1952) and Bobby Jaspar (1954).

In 1954 he founded the experimental Jazz Groupe de Paris , which included Bobby Jaspar, Roger Guérin , Pierre Michelot , Buzz Gardner , Christian Garros , Fats Sadi and Nat Peck , among others . It should combine symphonic music and jazz. In the same year he became president of the Academie du Jazz de Paris .

Hodeir's compositions include two Livres d 'Essais (1954 and 1956), numerous film scores ( e.g. Le Palais Idéal for Adonis Kyrou (1958), La Jazz Cantata for the film Chutes de pierres , for the films Mamselle Pigalle by Roger Vadim (1958) ), Saint Tropez Blues by Marcel Moussy (1961), World Without Sun by Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1964)). In 1957 his composition Paradoxe III was performed at the Donaueschinger Musiktage .

In the 1960s he led his own orchestra, with which he recorded his compositions Catalyze , Arte della commedia dell ' , Transplantation , but also Crepuscule with Nelly (again recorded on an album with Martial Solal in 1984). The Modern Jazz Quartet also recorded pieces by him. In 1966 he composed the monumental jazz cantata Anna Livia Plurabelle for Finnegans Wake by James Joyce , which he recorded himself and which received the Grand Prix du Disque when it was released in 1972 . In the same year he composed Bitter Ending for the Swingle Singers as the second part of the diptych Jazz on Joyce . He also composed a jazz quintet for the final monologue of Finnegans Wake.

As a jazz critic, his scientific approach gained general recognition early on. From 1947 to 1950 he was the editor of the journal Jazz Hot and during that time an avid advocate of bebop . In 1954 his book Hommes et problemes du Jazz was published , one of the first analytical musicological studies on jazz, which is considered a standard work.

In the 1970s he published an anthology with short stories and three novels, u. a. Le rire de Swann . In 1971 the French television film A Jazz Portrait was made about him .

André Hodeir died on November 1, 2011 in Versailles near Paris at the age of 90.
