Andreas Carolus

Andreas Carolus (* August 1632 in Leibenstadt ; † September 1, 1704 in St. Georgen in the Black Forest ) was a German Lutheran theologian and clergyman .

Life

Carolus was born as the son of pastor David Carolus. He attended schools in Öhringen and Heilbronn before he was ordered by Duke Eberhard III. von Württemberg was admitted to the monastery school Bebenhausen . There he received his further education under Johann Valentin Andreae . He then began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Tübingen . After completing his bachelor's degree in philosophy, he received a scholarship from the Tübingen monastery . This was followed by the master’s degree and the study of theology. After completing this too, he became a repetiteur at the monastery and then a preacher in Göppingen , Stuttgart and Schorndorf .

Carolus got a job as a deacon in Calw in 1656 . As such he went to Tübingen in 1659 . In 1668 he became special superintendent for Tübingen and Bebenhausen, and in 1679 in Urach . In 1686 he finally became abbot of the Sankt Georgen monastery in the Black Forest and ducal consistorial councilor. He dealt with church-historical studies and wrote a historical-critical explanation of the passion story .

The theologian Andreas David Carolus was his son, the Tübingen mayor Johann Adam Kurrer was his son-in-law.
