Andreas Iten (1982)

Andreas Iten (born February 27, 1936 in Unterägeri ) is a Swiss politician ( FDP ) and writer . From 1974 to 1994 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Zug and from 1986 to 1998 a member of the Council of States . From 1999 to 2013 he was president of the Central Switzerland Writers' Association (ISSV).

Life and career

Andreas Iten was born into a farming family. As the oldest of eight children, he grew up with his siblings in Unterägeri and went to school there. After a year of commercial school at the Cantonal School in Zug, he switched to the teachers' seminar in Schwyz , where he acquired a teaching certificate. From 1957 to 1961 he taught at the schools in Baar . In 1958 he married the teacher and singer Elisabeth Lüthold. In 1961 the couple moved to Basel, where Elisabeth was engaged as a choir singer with solo commitments at the Stadttheater. Andreas Iten meanwhile studied psychology , education and philosophy at the University of Basel (1961–1965). In 1965 Elisabeth received an engagement at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Andreas continued his studies at the Free University of Berlin . In 1966 they both returned to Switzerland, where Iten taught psychology and education at the Bernarda teacher training college in Menzingen until 1974 . His wife Elisabeth took over the leadership of the children's choir in Unterägeri. She appeared as a soloist in trade fairs and concerts.

In 1993 Andreas Iten was made an honorary citizen of Unterägeri.

Andreas Iten has been widowed since 2004. He has two daughters and still lives in Unterägeri today.

politics

Iten was elected to the Unterägeri municipal council in 1970 as a newcomer to politics, where he was also mayor and represented his party until 1977. Also in 1970 he was elected to the Zug Cantonal Council . In 1974 he was elected to the Zug government council. From 1974 to 1994 he was Head of the Interior and Forestry Directorate. Under Iten, the municipal law and the social welfare law (so-called «poor law» from 1918) were revised, as well as the forest and hunting law. He still got the revision of the fisheries law under way. During his reign, debt collection assistance, alimony advances and an equal opportunities office were set up. Iten was elected Landammann twice . He held this office in 1985 and 1986 as well as in 1991 and 1992. In 1994 he did not run for the government council elections.

Iten was also active as a politician at the federal level. From 1986 to 1998 he represented the Canton of Zug in the Council of States. There he worked, among other things, as President of the Audit Committee and as a teller. He also presided over the Commission for Science, Education and Culture (WBK) and the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication Commission (DETEC) of the Federal Office for the Environment. He was also a delegate of the Parliament's Administrative Commission. At the time of his resignation, he was Vice President of the Council of States and would have presided over the body a year later.

Literary work

Iten was already active as a writer while he was working as a professional politician. He wrote columns for the print media for decades. First under the pseudonym "AMI" for the "Zuger Tagblatt", later as "Andreas Iten, Council of States" or "old Council of States", for the " Neue Luzerner Zeitung ", the "Zuger Nachrichten" and the "Zuger Presse" . Today his columns appear on the website of Seniorweb Switzerland. Iten has published numerous novels, volumes of short stories, poems and non-fiction books as well as essays.

In 1999 Iten took over the presidency of the Central Swiss Writers' Association . In this function he made the diverse literary work in Central Switzerland known beyond the region. Among other things, he initiated the “Central Switzerland Literature Days” in the Willisau Mill , which merged into the “Rigi Literature Days” in autumn 2010, and the “Höhenflug” literature festival, which takes place every third year in Zug. In 2013, Iten resigned as ISSV President.
