Andreas J. Mueller

Andreas J. Mueller (born November 3, 1950 in Leipzig ) is a German caricaturist , painter and graphic artist . He is the director of the German Photo Museum .

Life

Andreas J. Mueller studied from 1970 to 1975 at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) with Hans Mayer-Foreyt , Werner Tübke and Heinz Wagner . Since then he has been working as a freelance caricaturist and illustrator. From 1972 caricatures by Andreas J. Mueller appeared in Eulenspiegel , in the magazine "Elternhaus und Schule" and the Leipziger Volkszeitung .

Mueller's drawings, which were politically satirical and critical of the GDR, meant that from 1978 onwards his caricatures were no longer published by any newspaper. In the eighties Mueller was mainly active as a book illustrator, comic and cartoon artist. From 1979 his comic series Basil in the rainbow country and from 1981 Basil in space appeared in the weekly magazine "Für Dich" . Further episodes appeared in the children's book publisher. Mueller produced cartoons for television in the GDR .

From 1981 to 1987 he was chairman of the "Section Caricature and Press Drawings GDR South". Andreas J. Mueller was the initiator of the Karicartoon exhibition series, which he supervised from 1977 to 1987.

In 1988 Mueller fled the GDR . After the opening of the New Leipzig School exhibition in Bergisch Gladbach , he stayed in Germany and then lived and worked in Munich . There he worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Quick , Esquire , the television magazine Gong , the Swiss satirical magazine Nebelspalter and the Bayerischer Rundfunk . During his time in Munich he published the books Freiräume und Wahnsinn together with Ulrich Forchner .

Since 1995 Andreas J. Mueller has lived and worked as a freelance artist and curator in Leipzig again . In 1997 he re-founded the biennial of satirical drawings under the name Karicartoon , which he curated at the Leipzig City History Museum until 2013 . As a curator for the Camera and Photo Museum Leipzig , he has realized over 100 exhibitions so far. He has been director of the German Photo Museum since 2014.
