Andreas Möller (according to other spellings Andreas Møller , Andreas Moeller , Andreas Millar or Andreas Millear ) (born November 30, 1684 in Copenhagen , † after 1752, probably 1762 in Berlin ) was a Danish miniature and portrait painter who worked at many European royal courts .

life and work

Andreas Möller was the first Danish painter of international standing. Andreas was the son of Daniel Møller, the drawing teacher of the Danish King Frederik IV. Even in his youth, Andreas Möller spent a lot of time abroad, especially in London. He was considered to be "half an Englishman" and was later referred to as the "English Möller" to distinguish it from his father. In 1712 he left Denmark for good to work in Vienna, Kassel, Dresden, London, Paris, Florence, Mannheim, Leipzig and Berlin, where works by him have been preserved everywhere. His work mainly includes portraits of members of European royal and princely houses, including a portrait of Maria Theresa as a girl at the age of eleven from 1727 and King Frederick I of Prussia, which was probably a copy of another work only after his death was created in 1713. From 1715 to 1721 he was court painter to Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel . Then Andreas Möller worked in Vienna, where he became Emperor Karl VI. as well as portraying the empress and the couple's daughters.

King Christian VI from Denmark and Norway met Andreas Möller in Dresden and acquired his nine ideal portraits of beautiful women, painted in 1732 and 1733, for Amalienborg Palace . Today these paintings are on display at the State Art Museum in Copenhagen . From 1736 to 1741 Christian VI. him as court painter. The portraits of the king and his wife Sophie Magdalene von Brandenburg-Kulmbach as well as the crown prince and later king Frederik V as a boy date from this period .

In 1737, the only known genre painting by Andreas Möller was created. It shows a boxing match in the streets of London, the first representation of this martial art in a painting. In 1749, Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel bought the picture that can be seen again in Kassel today.

Möller was also a master of miniature painting. He was one of the first painters in Europe to use ivory as a painting surface. Andreas Möller probably studied the miniature collection of King Frederik IV , which was then located in Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. As a result, he came into contact with the early miniatures of the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera (1675–1757) and developed this art further. He created several miniatures of portraits for the imperial family in Vienna.

Möller spent his twilight years in Berlin, where he died - probably in 1762.
