Professional career

Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival

At the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival from 1987 to 1989, Schulz was initially responsible for the pedagogical areas of the master classes at the Lübeck University of Music and the Orchestra Academy at Salzau Castle. He then held the position of Managing Director of the festival's masterclasses from 1989 to 1992. During this time he also held teaching positions for cultural management at the Hamburg University of Music and Performing Arts (1992) and the Lübeck University of Music (1992/93). In 1994 he was Managing Director of the festival orchestra at Schloss Salzau.

Lübeck University of Music

From 1992 to 1993 he headed the department for events and public relations at the Lübeck University of Music. There he was responsible for the planning, organization and implementation of the Brahms Festival 1993, the competition and the rectors' conference of the music academies in May 1993. During this time he also pursued a teaching position for cultural management.

The Bremen bell

From 1995 to 1997 Schulz held the position of managing director of Glocke Veranstaltungs-GmbH. After the renovation and reopening of the Bremer Konzerthaus, he succeeded in positioning the house internationally through a new program.

Gewandhaus in Leipzig

Schulz has been the Gewandhaus Director (Artistic Director) at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig since 1998 and thus organizes the artistic management of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Gewandhaus. In this position he worked with the conductors Herbert Blomstedt , Riccardo Chailly and Andris Nelsons , who will be the 21st Gewandhaus Kapellmeister from the 2017/2018 season. On February 13, 2019, the Leipzig city council unanimously approved the extension of the contract of Gewandhaus director Andreas Schulz until July 31, 2025 without abstentions.

Gewandhaus in Leipzig

During his time as director of the Gewandhaus, Schulz signed contracts with Riccardo Chailly and Andris Nelsons. He was also instrumental in initiating the 2011 International Mahler Festival in Leipzig and the Mendelssohn Festival, which were held annually until 2016. Shortly after taking office, he initiated the expansion of his own department for music education at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig , which has since implemented projects with children, families and young adults and thus reached around 11,700 visitors in a total of 92 events in 2017. In the 2004/2005 season, Andreas Schulz founded the joint Mendelssohn Orchestra Academy together with the Leipzig University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" , thus continuing the traditional connection between the HMT Leipzig and the Gewandhaus Orchestra initiated by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .

Schulz is the initiator of new concert formats at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Shortly after taking office, he organized the crossover festival Strings of Fire (2001-2003). In 2006 he launched the Audio Invasion (annually until 2017). As part of this festival format, artists from the electro and pop scene came to the Leipzig Gewandhaus. In the 2017/18 Gewandhaus season he started the concert project Two Play To Play, in which musicians from the Gewandhaus work together with musicians from the independent scene on the creation of a new work and make their musical creative process accessible to the public. Schulz also initiated the open-air festival Klassik Airleben m Leipziger Rosental, which has been taking place since 2009. Schulz initiated a cooperation between the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester, in which the two orchestras have been working closely together since the 2017/2018 Gewandhaus season in the areas of program design, training and staffing.

With the conception of a marketing concept for the Gewandhausorchester, he also prevented a decline in the number of subscribers. The number of subscribers fell from 1991/1992 to 1999/2000 from 9,527 to 7,677 and rose in the following years (until 2001/2002) by 41% to 10,861.

In 2015, together with the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management , Schulz initiated a study on the indirect profitability of the Gewandhaus. It proves the positive economic importance of the Gewandhaus for the city of Leipzig and is considered to be the first detailed and scientifically based study in Germany that was presented for a single concert hall.

In order to meet the increasing need for third-party funding, Schulz founded the Gewandhausorchester Sponsors Club.

Teaching and memberships

Schulz has been teaching as an honorary professor at the University of Bremen for the field of music and culture management since 2001 and also holds teaching positions at the University of Leipzig . In 2007 he became a member of the Scientific Society for Marketing and Management, based in Leipzig.

Schulz was the Saxon Senator for Culture from 2012 to 2017. In addition, he is co-initiator of the German Concert Hall Conference and founding initiator of various networks for marketing and media at concert halls and festivals. He is co-founder of "The Management Symphony" (1999) and a co-founder of the Orchestra Foundation of German Business.
