Andreas Sennert

Andreas Sennert (born June 7, 1606 in Wittenberg ; † December 21, 1689 ibid) was a German orientalist , lexicographer and librarian .

Life

Andreas Sennert was the son of the doctor Daniel Sennert (1572–1637). He studied at the University of Wittenberg , at the University of Leipzig , with Johann Gerhard at the University of Jena and in 1636 with Johann Schmidt (theologian, 1594) at the University of Strasbourg . He continued his studies at the University of Leiden with Jacob Golius (1596–1667), from whom he learned the Arabic language and himself developed a good method to convey the same. After returning to Wittenberg, he became an associate professor of philosophy in 1638 and, in 1640, a full professor of Hebrew language and oriental studies as the successor to Jakob Weller .

In those years of activity, but also as a historian on the history of the Wittenberg University, he gained a lot of recognition for the philosophy faculty and thus indirectly also for the university. Sennert, who also became a senior at the Wittenberg Academy in 1668, took part in the organizational tasks of the alma mater. He was repeatedly dean of the philosophical faculty and in the winter semester 1648 prorector of the University of Wittenberg. Rector of this university in the summer semesters 1664 and 1688 . In his capacity as librarian at the Wittenberg University, he gained a lot of recognition by publishing a directory for the university.

He was buried on December 26, 1689 in the Wittenberg Castle Church, where an epitaph was erected for him .

Act

Sennert, who shaped the Wittenberg Chair for Orientalists for almost half a century, placed particular emphasis on learning the Arabic language. He wanted to make the indispensable writings and inventions of the Arab world accessible to theologians, doctors, mathematicians and philosophers. In his main works, the Hypotyposis harmonica linguarum Orientalium and the Grammatica orientalis , he treated the various Semitic languages and dialects synoptically. In the works he successively referenced the Hebrew language, the Chaldean language, the Syrian language, the Arabic language, the Targume and the Talmud , adding the appropriate dictionaries.

Especially in the Hebrew language, he was concerned with the vowels and accents. In doing so, he went beyond the then prevailing interpretations and continued to develop them for a long time. As a librarian at the Wittenberg University of Applied Sciences, he was responsible for buying books for many years and thus had an influence on the organization of the study program at Leucorea that should not be underestimated. It is also quite remarkable that Andreas Sennert has entries in the register. In addition, there is a large number of dissertations that arose in the context of his university activities.

family

Sennert was married twice. His first marriage was on February 5, 1639 in Delitzsch with Maria (* December 18, 1615 in Delitzsch; † January 26, 1661 in Wittenberg), the daughter of the notary, lawyer and mayor of Delitzsch Johann Franz († January 29, 1639 ) and his wife Maria, daughter of the electoral Saxon magistrate in Delitzsch Georg Grosmann.
