Andrei Jurjewitsch Demanow ( Russian Андрей Юрьевич Деманов ; born July 15, 1985 in Kuibyshev ) is a Russian weightlifter . In 2011 and 2014 he was European champion in a duel in medium and heavyweight .

Career

Andrei Demanov began lifting weights as a teenager. He is a student and starts for a sports club from Kazan. The 1.78 meter tall athlete began his international weightlifting career at the 2003 European Junior Championships (U 20) in Valencia in the middle heavyweight division , the weight class in which he only competed until 2012. He reached 347.5 kg (150-197.5) and came in 6th place. With his performance of 197.5 kg in jerking, he won a bronze medal in his first international competition. In his further career it became clear that pushing is his particular strength.

In 2004 he was in Burgas Junior European Champion (U 20) in a duel with 370 kg (165–205). He also won in the individual disciplines of snatching and pushing. In May 2005 Andrei Demanow won the snatch title at the Junior World Championship (U 20) in Busan with 168 kg. In pushing, his favorite discipline, he had the mishap of making three failed attempts with 204 or 205 kg. So he did not get a duel and remained unplaced. This was the only complete failure in his long career!

2006 Andrei Demanow started for the first time at the Russian championship in the senior division. He achieved in the duel 389 kg (171-218), which he came behind Roman Konstantinow , 398 kg (180-218) and Muchamad Sosajew, 395 kg (177-218) in 3rd place. In June 2006, the Russian Weightlifting Association used him for the first time at an international senior championship, the European Championship in Władysławowo / Poland. He increased there in a duel to 393 kg (176-217), making him runner-up European champion. He won a bronze medal in both tearing and pushing. In 2007 he came in the Russian championship with 392 kg (177-217) behind Chadschimurat Akkajew , who achieved 399 kg (182-217), on the 2nd place. A performance-related setback he had to accept at the European Championships in April 2007 in Strasbourg, where he only came to 368 kg (165-203) in a duel and won no medal. In September 2007 he was in better shape again at the World Championships in Chiang Mai / Thailand and came to 387 kg (170-217) in a duel, with which he reached 4th place.

At the Russian Championship 2008 Andrei Demanow came with 385 kg (170-215) behind Chadschimurat Akkajew, 395 kg (180-215) and Andrei Skorobogatow, 392 kg (177-215) in 3rd place. He was then used at the 2008 European Championships in Lignano and won two silver medals there, namely in the duel with 385 kg (172-213) and in the jerk with 213 kg. He was not nominated for the weightlifting competitions at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In 2009, Andrei Demanov reached 395 kg (178-217), which he achieved in the Russian championship in a duel, again only to 3rd place behind Vasily Polownikow , 406 kg (180-226) and Chadschimurat Akkajew, 406 (186– 220). But he was used at the European Championships, which took place in Bucharest in April 2009, but was not in good shape there. He achieved there in a duel 380 kg (170-210). This duel was enough for 3rd place behind Jürgen Spieß from Germany, 390 kg (178-212) and Nikolaos Kourtidis, Greece, 385 kg (175-210). At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang he achieved 381 kg (171-210) and came in 5th place in a duel. Even with his performances in snatching and pushing, he did not win a medal there.

2010 Andrei Demanow increased in the Russian championship in a duel to 403 kg (177-226). But this performance was exceeded by Alexander Ivanov , who came to 408 kg (183-225) and Andrei Demanow referred to 2nd place in a duel. This year it was not at the European Championship, but at the World Championship in Antalya. He came there in a duel on 393 kg (175-218), which only reached 4th place. With his shock performance of 218 kg he won a bronze medal, the first senior World Championship medal in his career.

In 2011 Andrei Demanov won two important championship titles. He was the first Russian champion in the duel with 393 kg (175-218) and referred Alexander Ivanov, who came to 392 kg (177-215), on the 2nd place. In April 2011 he was also the first time European champion in a duel with 391 kg (171-220) in Kazan. With his shock performance of 220 kg he also won. In August 2011 he won the Universiade in Shenzhen / China with 390 kg (177–213). At the World Championships this year in Paris, he increased in a duel to 398 kg (178-220), but only came in 6th place. He also did not win a medal for his performance in snatching and pushing. World champion in the duel was Ilya Ilyin from Kazakhstan in Paris , who achieved 407 kg (181-226) in a duel.

At the Russian Championship 2012 Andrei Demanow increased in a duel to an excellent 407 kg (181-226) and with this performance was only second behind Alexander Ivanov, who increased to 411 kg (185-226). In July 2012 he was then used at the Olympic Games in London. He also achieved 407 kg in a duel and with this good performance just missed the medal ranks because he was a few grams heavier than Anatolii Cîrîcu from Moldova. The first Olympic champion was Kazakh Ilya Ilyin, who was disqualified for doping in 2016 , ahead of Alexander Ivanov, 409 kg (185–224) and Anatolii Cîrîcu, 407 kg (181–226).

In 2013 Andrei Demanow switched from medium to heavyweight, the weight class up to 105 kg body weight. The year 2013 was already the eleventh year in which he was among the absolute world leaders at the highest level of performance and in which the enormous training load of all these years was evident. He came in the Russian championship in the new weight class with 385 kg (175-210) only on the 8th place and was therefore not used in the European and nor in the world championships this year. But he started at the Universiade in Kazan and achieved there in a duel 406 kg (180-226) and was thus behind Ruslan Nurudinow , Uzbekistan, 412 kg (190-220) second winner.

In 2014 he was not at the start in the Russian championship, but still received the association's trust at the European championship, which took place in Tel Aviv in April of this year. He achieved there in the heavyweight 405 kg (182-222) and was thus European champion in the duel before Timur Naniew, Russia, 404 kg (182-222) and the ex-world champion Andrei Aramnau , Belarus, 396 kg (184-212).

A review of Demanov's doping sample from the 2012 Olympics was positive for Turinabol . He was therefore subsequently disqualified in 2016.
