Andrei Marga

Andrei Marga (born May 22, 1946 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian philosopher , political scientist , politician and university professor . Marga was rector of the Babes Bolyai University in Cluj (1993-2004), education minister (1997-2000) and in 2012 briefly foreign minister of Romania in the first cabinet in Ponta .

Career

Andrei Marga studied philosophy at the Babes Bolyai University in Cluj. As a student he was a member of the Romanian Communist Party . In 1975 he received a DAAD scholarship and did research at the Universities of Freiburg , Bielefeld and Frankfurt am Main for his doctorate in philosophy. Between 1984 and 1990 he enjoyed several study trips to the universities in Erlangen , Münster and Frankfurt am Main.

Andrei Marga is the author of several books in the fields of contemporary philosophy , political philosophy , philosophy of religion , history of philosophy . His most important works deal with the works of Marcuse and Habermas , both representatives of the Frankfurt School . From 1993 to 2004 and between 2008 and 2012 he headed the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca.

Politician

From 1997 to 2000 Marga was Minister of Education in the Ciorbea , Vasile and Isărescu cabinets of the National Christian Democratic Peasant Party ( Romanian Partidul Național Țărănesc Creștin Democrat PNȚCD ). After the PNȚCD's electoral defeat in 2000, he was temporarily chairman of the PNȚCD, but then switched to the National Liberal Party ( Romanian Partidul Național Liberal ).

From May 7 to August 6, 2012, Marga was Foreign Minister of Romania in the first Ponta cabinet . He was then appointed head of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) , but resigned from the office in June 2013.
