Andrzej Karweta (born June 11, 1958 in Jelén , Jaworzno , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish vice admiral .

biography

After attending the high school " Stanisław Staszic " (Liceum Ogólnokształcące) in Chrzanów , he began training at the Naval Academy (Akademia Marynarki Wojennej) in Gdynia in 1977 , which he completed as a marine engineer with a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) . At the same time he received the officer license as a lieutenant in the Polish Navy (Marynarka Wojenna Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej).

As such, he was first at the 13th mine countermeasures Division in Hel used and subsequently at the 9th coasts - Flotilla "Rear Admiral Włodzimierz Steyer". In 1986 he was appointed commander of the minesweeper ORP "Czapla" of the class F-206. Later he was in command of the minesweeper ORP "Mewa" and then completed a leadership course at the Naval Academy. After a course in operations and tactics at the Institute for Staff Officers of the Naval Academy, he was Chief of Staff of the 13th Anti-Mine Division between 1992 and 1996 .

After another course at the Institute for Staff Officers of the Naval Academy in 1997, he was in command of an international minesweeper unit during the US BALTOPS 2000 maneuver in the Baltic Sea . In 2002 he was appointed Deputy Commander of the Submarine Units of the NATO Naval Forces in the Atlantic ( SACLANT ) in Norfolk, Virginia .

After his return in 2005 he was first deputy commander of the 8th coastal defense flotilla "Kazimierz Porębski" in Świnoujście . In 2006 he completed a course in defense policy at the National Defense Academy (Akademia Obrony Narodowej) in Warsaw . After a further course at the Royal College of Defense Studies (RCDS) in London , he was promoted to Rear Admiral on May 3, 2007 and appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy in Gdynia.

After his promotion to Vice Admiral on November 8, 2007, he was appointed Commander in Chief of the Polish Navy on November 11, 2007 by President Lech Kaczyński .

On April 10, 2010, Karweta was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński, who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

He has received several awards for his services and the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland . In 2010 he was posthumously appointed Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta .
