The documented history of Andwil begins at the beginning of the 13th century. In 1470 Andwil and its bailiwick are sold to the Heilig-Geist-Spital in St. Gallen. As a result of the rupture of the Rorschach monastery , Andwil was made federal in 1490, but was then sold to the abbot; Andwil is now finally abbot. The parish church and the cross- ridge frame house "Hirschen" were built in 1732 from the chunky stones of the Andwil castle ruins . In the same year, the Andwil school was first mentioned in a document.
June 21, 1803 is considered the birthday of the Political Community of Andwil.
