Andrew Philip "Andy" Welinski (born April 27, 1993 in Duluth , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and for their farm team , the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , plays in the American Hockey League on the position of defender .

Career

Welinski first spent his junior career until 2010 at Duluth East High School , where, in addition to his school career, he also pursued ice hockey for the school team. The defender then moved to the United States Hockey League . There he played for two years for the Green Bay Gamblers, with whom he won the Clark Cup at the end of the 2011/12 season. He was also named Defenseman of the Year of the League. He was also named Junior Player of the Year by the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey . After two years in the USHL, Welinski moved to the University of Minnesota-Duluth to pursue a degree. As in high school, he also played for the university team. First a year in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , followed by three years in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference , both divisions in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

After the defender had been appointed to numerous national teams over the course of four years and was selected in the third round in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks from the National Hockey League , he was promoted to after completing his studies in April 2016 signed the Ducks. He then made his professional debut for Anaheim's farm team , the San Diego Gulls , in the American Hockey League at the end of the 2015/16 season . There the American was the following season, in which he also made his NHL debut for the Ducks, firmly in the squad.

In July 2019, Welinski joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent .

International

For his home country Welinski was in the line-up for the World Junior A Hockey Challenge 2011 and won the bronze medal. He himself was used in five tournament games and collected two scorer points , including a goal.
