Anita Faye Hill (born July 30, 1956 in Lone Tree , Oklahoma ) is an American lawyer , university professor, and suffragette .

Life

Anita Hill comes from a large farming family, her great-grandparents and also her maternal grandfather were slaves in the state of Arkansas . She attended Morris High School in Oklahoma and studied psychology at Oklahoma State University - Stillwater (BA, 1977). She graduated from the Law School of Yale University with a Juris Doctor degree in 1980 , then was admitted to the Washington, DC bar and began her career in a law firm.

From 1981 she worked in the Department of Civil Rights in the United States Department of Education under the department head Clarence Thomas , with whom she went to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in 1982 .

In 1983, Hill was given a position as assistant professor at the Evangelical Christian OW Coburn School of Law of Oral Roberts University . In 1986 she moved to the University of Oklahoma College of Law , where she taught commercial law.

In 1991 she accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during the period in which he was her superior. The accusations caused a great public attention because Thomas judge to the Supreme Court of the United States ( Supreme Court was nominated) and was finally appointed. Hill was accused of false testimony, questioned publicly, and after 1996 dismissed from the University of Oklahoma . The democratic politician Joe Biden , then chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the US Senate , apologized in 2017 at Hill for his former passivity in the Senate hearings.

In 1997 Hill received a teaching position at the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of California, Berkeley , then went to a women's research program at Brandeis University , where he switched to the Heller School for Social Policy and Management . Since 2011 she has also worked as a civil rights consultant for a law firm. In 2015 she was appointed Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women's Studies at Brandeis University.

Since December 2017, Hill has been conducting an investigation into employment relationships in the entertainment industry in the wake of the Weinstein scandal and its public reception for the Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace (German: Commission on Sexual Harassment and the Improvement of Equal Opportunities at Work ) through #MeToo . The commission was initiated by the film producer Kathleen Kennedy , Maria Eitel von Nike , the lawyer Nina Shaw and the entrepreneur Freada Kapor Klein.

In 2020 Hill was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
