Anli Sugano
Anli Sugano ( Japanese ア ン リ 菅 野 , Anri Sugano , actually: Shizuko Umeyama ( 梅山 静 子 , Umeyama Shizuko ), born August 7, 1948 in Toshima , Tokyo ; † June 30, 2000 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese jazz singer of mainstream jazz .
Her father was the jazz vocalist Tsutomu Umeyama ( 梅山 勤 , Umeyama Tsutomu ), her mother a pianist, so that she began taking piano and ballet lessons at the age of five. However, she only began studying oil painting at the Musashino Art School . When she attended a modern jazz seminar, she then decided to become a jazz singer. After graduation, she went to New York, where she received classes in modern ballet, jazz and dance. She returned three years later and founded the rock band Anli & Moses with her as lead singer.
Anli Sugano was active in the Tokyo jazz scene from the 1970s; She presented her debut album as a jazz singer Anli Ichi ( あ ん り い ち , Eng. "Anli 1") in 1978, followed by Shining Wave (Far East, 1979), on which she performed well-known pop and jazz standards such as " The Girl from Ipanema " or " We'll Be Together Again ”sang. 1979/1980 she performed in Tokyo with the Concord Jazz All Stars , which also included Scott Hamilton , Warren Vaché , Dave McKenna , Cal Collins and Jake Hanna .
In the 1980s Sugano made a number of albums with Eastworld, Concord and Philips ; she also performed with the Benny Carter Jazz All Stars Orchestra. During a stay in New York in 1987, she produced her last album In Manhattan , on which Sugano was accompanied by Ruby Braff , John Campbell , Howard Alden , Jack Lesberg and Ronnie Zito . In the field of jazz, she lists Tom Lord in seven recording sessions between 1979 and 1987.
In 1998 an incurable adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. In 1999 she wrote a book about her experiences with the disease, Onna Hitori Gan to Tatakau ( 女 ひ と り が ん と 闘 う , “One woman's struggle with cancer alone”, Seishun Shuppansha). A year later she succumbed to cancer.
