Ansgar Belke

Ansgar Belke (born March 28, 1965 in Münster ; † July 21, 2020 ) was a German economist .

Life

Ansgar Belke studied economics at the Universities of Münster , Paris and Kiel and received his doctorate from the Ruhr University Bochum , where he also obtained his habilitation in economics and econometrics .

He was a substitute professor ( C4 ) for International Economic Relations, University of Essen (2000), full professor for economics, especially macroeconomics, applied economics and economic policy, at the University of Vienna (2000-2001), C4 professor for economics, especially foreign trade, at the university Hohenheim (2001–2007) at the same time board member at the Eastern European Center of the University of Hohenheim and head of the European Integration Research Center at the University of Hohenheim.

Belke was visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, CentER Tilburg, Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) Brussels , Institute for World Economy (IfW) Kiel , German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) Berlin and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) Vienna . He was also Research Director for International Macroeconomics at DIW and visiting professor at the Hertie School of Governance . From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the Monetary Expert Panel of the European Parliament .

Belke held the chair for economics, in particular macroeconomics, at the University of Duisburg-Essen , where he was director of the Institute for Business Administration and Economics (IBES) and head of the House of Energy Markets and Finance (HEMF). In 2012 he became ( ad personam ) Jean Monnet Professor. He was also Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Center for European Policy Studies , Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Data Analytics for Finance and Macroeconomics (DAFM), King's Business School London, member of the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) and visiting professor at Europa -Institute Saarbrücken .

He was President of the European Economics and Finance Society (EEFS), Research Fellow at the Research Institute for the Future of Work (IZA) Bonn, the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and Central European Labor Studies Institute (CELSI) Bratislava, external advisor to the Directorate-General for Economics and Finance (DG ECFIN) of the European Commission , external advisor to the European Union Committee of the House of Lords and carried out third-party funded projects for the Bundesbank , the European Commission , the Federal Ministries of Finance and Labor and Social Affairs .

Belke's main research interests were monetary theory and policy, European integration , international macroeconomics , transformation economics , finance (including venture capital , money and capital markets) and applied econometrics.

Belke served as the managing editor of Applied Economics Quarterly , Credit and Capital Markets, and Economist's Voice . He was sole editor of the series Financial and Monetary Policy Studies (Springer) and co-editor of the series Quantitative Ökonomie at Eul-Verlag and HVS Hohenheimer Volkswirtschaftliche Schriften for numerous other journals.

Belke was the keynote lecturer at a number of international conferences, including the Blockchain Economic Forum (BEF) in Davos / Switzerland in 2019 as a keynote speaker and the Koç University - TÜSİAD Economic Research Forum as a keynote speaker in 2017 (ERF) Conference EU Negotiations, Customs Union, and Economic Growth , in 2014 of the Greek Government Roundtable in Athens / Greece.

Ansgar Belke died suddenly and unexpectedly on July 21, 2020 at the age of 55. He left behind his wife and three children.
