Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira

Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira (born June 10, 1926 in Orizona , † February 28, 2017 in Goiânia ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Goiânia .

Life

Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira was ordained priest on April 2, 1949 in the Mariana (MG).

Pope John XXIII appointed him on August 25, 1961 titular bishop of Arindela and auxiliary bishop in Goiânia. The Archbishop of Goiânia, Fernando Gomes dos Santos , donated him episcopal ordination on October 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Abel Ribeiro Camelo , Bishop of Goiás , and José Lázaro Neves CM , Bishop of Assis . Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira participated in the last session of the Second Vatican Council . He was Apostolic Administrator of Goiás from 1966 to 1967 and Apostolic Administrator of Itumbiara from 1972 to 1973.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 19, 1975 Bishop of Ipameri . On October 23, 1985, he was appointed Archbishop of Goiânia by Pope John Paul II . He was President of the Midwest Region of the CNBB (1987–1991). On May 8, 2002, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira died of complications from a heart attack; he was also diabetic. He was very popular with the population and known for his dedication, selflessness and work for the people. The state government imposed a three-day state mourning in the state of Goiás .
