Anthony Paul Bamford, Baron Bamford (born October 23, 1945 in Staffordshire ) is a British entrepreneur , economic manager and politician of the Conservative Party . He has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since October 2013 .

Life

Bamford was born the son of entrepreneur Joseph Cyril Bamford (1916-2001). His father was the owner and CEO ( Chairman ) of JCB , a British manufacturer of land - and equipment . He attended Ampleforth College , one of Benedictine monks led co-educational boarding school in Ampleforth in the county of North Yorkshire . He then completed a specialized training in Engineering ( Engineering ) in the agricultural machinery manufacturer Massey Ferguson in France.

In 1964 he joined his father's company as a salesman. In the late 1960s / early 1970s, as part of an intensified export offensive, he was promoted to the management of JCB. In 1975, at the age of 30, he took over the management of the company from his retired father. He has since been Chairman and Managing Director of JCB. Bamford built JCB into an international group, but continued to manufacture machine parts in Great Britain. In 1978 he opened a wheel axle factory in Wales as the company's in-house facility. In 1979 Bamford was responsible for the company's expansion into India . JCB now employs over 3,000 people in India; the country represents the company's largest single market. Bamford founded further company locations in Brazil , the United States and the People's Republic of China . Despite internationalization and globalization of the markets, Bamford repeatedly and resolutely advocated Great Britain as a production location ; In 2012 a Commission report on the matter presented by Bamford was sent directly to Prime Minister David Cameron .

In August 2006, Bamford expressed an interest in purchasing Jaguar Cars ; however, he stepped down when he learned that the sale would also include the Land Rover brand , which he did not want to buy.

Bamford is considered one of the richest men in Britain. In April 2012, his net worth was estimated at £ 3.1 billion .

politics

Bamford is one of the Conservative Party's primary supporters and financial sponsors . Before the British general election, in 2010 he made a party donation of 1 million pounds to the Conservative Party. In 2010 he was nominated by David Cameron for the Life Peer survey . The party donations that had taken place shortly before spoke against him. Bamford then withdrew his nomination himself.

Bamford is also a close friend of Tony Blair and Prince Charles . Blair used u. a. a villa in Barbados owned by Bamford, private.

Membership in the House of Lords

On August 1, 2013, it was announced that Bamford would be made a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Conservative Party. He was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On October 3, 2013, he was formally promoted to Life Peer; he is called Baron Bamford , of Daylesford in the County of Gloucestershire and of Wootton in the County of Staffordshire . He has also been a formal member of the House of Lords since October 3, 2013. On November 7, 2013, with the assistance of Norman Tebbit, Baron Tebbit , and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber , he was officially inducted into the House of Lords.

Honors and private matters

In 1990 Bamford was promoted to a Knight Bachelor degree . Bamford has been married to the British entrepreneur and businesswoman Carole Bamford OBE (* 1946) since 1974 . The marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter.

Bamford is a well known collector of old, early models of Ferraris ; he owns two Ferrari 250 GTOs . Bamford also owned a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 racing car that was driven by Argentine racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio .
