Ian Anthony Hamilton-Smith, 3rd Baron Colwyn CBE , (born January 1, 1942 ) is a British peer and politician .

Life

He is the son of Frederick John Vivian Smith, 2nd Baron Colwyn and his wife Miriam Gwendoline Ferguson. He changed his family name from Smith to Hamilton-Smith . On May 29, 1966, on the death of his father, he inherited the title of 3rd Baron Colwyn , of Colwyn Bay in the County of Denbigh, and 3rd Baronet , of Colwyn Bay in the County of Denbigh.

He attended Cheltenham College . He studied dentistry at the University of London . He received his practical training at St Bartholomew's Hospital and at the Royal Dental Hospital, two renowned teaching hospitals of the University of London. He initially obtained a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and graduated in 1966 as a doctor of dentistry (Licentiate in Dental Surgery, LDS) and was licensed as a dentist . In the same year (1966) he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England . From 1966 to 2007 he worked as a resident dentist in his own practice.

From 1995 to 2001 he was Chairman (Chair) of Dental Protection Ltd, a non-profit organization that supports dentists. He was Director of the Medical Protection Society (1996-2001), from 1997 to 2001 Chairman (Chair) of Project Hope , an aid organization for children, and Chairman (Chair) of the aid organization "Action Against Hunger" (2000/2001) .

He was President of the Natural Medicines Society (1988-2005), the Huntington's Disease Association (1991-1998) and the Society for Advancement of Anesthesia in Dentistry (1993-1998). He was also President of the Arterial Health Foundation (1993–2004), the British Dental Association (BDA) in 1994 and 1995, and a Council Member of the Medical Protection Society (1994–2001).

He was the patron of the Eastman Research Institute Trust (1990-2001). He has been a trustee of the Portman Estate since 2004 . He is also a Fellow of the Industry and Parliament Trust and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine . Between 1999 and 2001 he was a Fellow of the Institute of Directors . In 2005 he became a Fellow of the British Dental Association.

Membership in the House of Lords

As Baron Colwyn , he has been an official member of the House of Lords since June 1, 1966 . He is one of the 92 elected Hereditary Peers who kept their seat in the House of Lords under the House of Lords Act 1999 . In the House of Lords he sits for the Conservative Party .

He was a member of numerous sub and special committees in the House of Lords. He was chairman of the Offices Sub-Committee on Refreshment (1997-2004), member of Science and Technology Sub-Committee III (Complementary Medicine; 2000-2001), member of the Select Committee on EU (Sub-Committee G; 2004 –2007, responsible for European Union affairs ) and member of the Science and Technology Select Committee (2007–2011).

Since 2007 he has been Deputy Chairman of Committees in the House of Lords. Since 2008 he has been Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. In July 2011 he ran for the office of Lord Speaker in the House of Lords . In a run-off election he was defeated by 285: 296 votes against Frances D'Souza, Baroness D'Souza .

He is a member of the Conservative Medical Society. He was an Executive Member of the Association of Conservative Peers (2004-2010)

Honors

In June 1989 he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his contributions to politics .

Private

He married his first wife Sonia Jane Morgan in May 1964; the marriage was divorced in 1977. The marriage resulted in two children, a daughter, Jacqueline Jane Hamilton-Smith (* 1967), who married Sean Pertwee in 1999 , and a son, Craig Peter Hamilton-Smith (* 1968). Since March 1977 he is married to Nicola Jeanne Tyers for the second time. The second marriage resulted in two daughters, Kirsten Antonia Hamilton-Smith (* 1981) and Tanya Nicole Hamilton-Smith (* 1983).

Hamilton-Smith's hobbies include golf and music . He appears as a semi-professional musician and band leader . He appears as a jazz trumpeter . He is the band leader of the Lord Colwyn Organization. He is also Chairman (Joint Chair) of the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group of the House of Lords.
