Anthony Sablan Apuron OFMCap (born November 1, 1945 in Hagåtña , Guam ) is the former Archbishop of Agaña .

Life

Anthony Sablan Apuron entered the religious order of the Capuchin and received on 26 August 1972, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On December 8, 1983 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Muzuca in Byzacena and auxiliary bishop in Agaña . The Archbishop of Agaña, Felixberto Camacho Flores , donated him episcopal ordination on February 19, 1984 ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Honolulu , Joseph Anthony Ferrario , and the Bishop of Naha , Peter Baptist Tadamarō Ishigami OFMCap. On October 27, 1985, Anthony Sablan Apuron was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Agaña. John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Agaña on March 10, 1986. The inauguration took place on May 11, 1986.

After serious allegations of sexual abuse were made against the Archbishop by several victims in May 2016 , Pope Francis put him on leave on June 6 and first appointed the Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Hong Kong- born Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai , to the Apostolic Administrator sede plena . On October 31, 2016, Michael Jude Byrnes was appointed coadjutor with special powers. In February 2017, a canonical trial of first instance began in Guam to investigate the allegations against Apuron. The tribunal set up by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith consisted of five bishops, the presiding judge is the former Prefect of the Apostolic Signature , Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke . In March 2018, the Tribunal revoked Apuron's status as archbishop and forbade him to live on the territory of his previous archbishopric. In the second and last instance, the judgment was confirmed in full on February 7, 2019. Sablan Apuron is permanently removed from office, is not allowed to stay in his former archdiocese temporarily and is not allowed to use episcopal insignia in the long term.
