Anton Calaminus

Leopold Petrus Anton Jakob Calaminus (born March 19, 1808 in Niedergründau , † July 13, 1868 in Hanau ) was a German Protestant theologian and historian .

Life

He was the son of pastor Franz Ludwig Christian Calaminus († April 13, 1812) and his wife, Marie Wilhelmine Karoline, née Heyl, and had eight siblings. After attending the grammar school in Büdingen (grammar school since 1822) and the high state school in Hanau, he was enrolled in the theology department at the Hessian state university (today: Philipps University ) in Marburg .

Career

Then he was employed from 1830 as tutor of the Hereditary Count Ferdinand Maximilian zu Ysenburg and Büdingen . This was followed by a church career. In 1836 he became a pastor, school inspector, member of the sub-consistory and rector of the Latin school in Wächtersbach . At the same time he married Karoline Luise Schaller (born December 13, 1812 in Bettingen ; † January 20, 1895 in Frankenberg ), daughter of a pastor and consistorial councilor from Kreuzwertheim . They had eleven children together.

In 1841 he became pastor at the Marienkirche in Hanau, from where he also worked as Metropolitan ( Dean ) of the parish class ( Dean's Office ) Büchertal from 1857 . In 1844 he was a founding member and until 1856, then again from 1866 until his death in 1868, first chairman of the Hanau District Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies (today: Hanauer Geschichtsverein eV), held at least 78 scientific lectures here, initiated the archaeological activities of the association, especially on the Roman Limes , and tried to take first steps to preserve monuments in Hanau and the surrounding area. He continued to play a key role in founding the Hanau City Library .

He left an extensive literary work, especially on the history of Hanau and the surrounding area.

Commemoration

He is the namesake of the Anton Calaminus School (ACS) and the multi-generation house Anton , both in Gründau- Rothenbergen .
