Anton Nagel

Anton Nagel (born May 6, 1742 in Moosburg ; † July 20, 1812 there ) was a Catholic clergyman, historian and poet.

Life

Anton Nagel attended grammar school in Landshut . After studying theology at the Prince-Bishop's Lyceum in Freising , he was ordained a priest in 1768. He then worked as an educator in Munich , from 1775 as chaplain in Marching and from 1790 as pastor in Rohr , where he promoted the young Johann Andreas Schmeller as a school inspector . In 1803 he resigned himself to the ministry. In the same year he was appointed a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1807 he received a benefit in his hometown of Moosburg.

Nagel, who belonged to the Illuminati order , campaigned for the goals of the Catholic Enlightenment . Education for virtue and patriotism were of particular concern to him . He published most of his writings and plays anonymously. They were very popular at the time, but were quickly forgotten. The patriotic drama The Civil Rebellion in Landshut was created in 1782 during the War of the Bavarian Succession of 1778/79. He wrote many poems in praise of the Bavarian Wittelsbach rulers. His essays were printed in the Munich and Churpfalzbaierischen intelligence papers .
