The petty-bourgeois Munich postal inspector Anton Sittinger only reads philosophical books such as Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and considers himself apolitical. The good official and his wife Malwine stay out of all political turmoil; they even flee to the countryside before the struggles of the revolution. But here makes during the Weimar Republic, the brown ideology of the Nazis wide. In order to be "on the right side" later, Malwine secretly lets her husband register as a member of the NSDAP .
