Antoniberg is a district of the Rennertshofen market ( district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen , Bavaria ) and at the same time a limestone mountain with a steep slope towards the Danube .

location

The district is located southeast of the Rennertshofen district of Stepperg , to whose district it belongs.

history

At the foot of the Antoni mountain, remains of a wooden bridge in the river bed of the Danube have been identified, which was built by the Romans around 150 AD and has been examined several times by the Bavarian Society for Underwater Archeology since 1992.

In the Old Kingdom, the Antoniberg, whose old name was "Iarnberg", with its chapel as a branch of the Stepperg parish (owned by the Niederschönenfeld monastery before the Reformation ) belonged to the county of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach and finally to the Hofmark Stepperg.

In the new Kingdom of Bavaria (1806) Stepperg was assigned to the Riedensheim tax district with the wasteland of Antoniberg and other places and mills . In 1840 Antoniberg only had two residents. When the communities were formed, Stepperg and Antoniberg became an independent community, which existed as such until the end of 1977. In the course of the regional reform in Bavaria , Stepperg and with it Antoniberg were incorporated into the Rennertshofen market on January 1, 1978.

Natural monument "Antoniberg with Strudelloch"

With the exception of the two chapel sites, the Antoniberg is a large natural monument of 3.2 hectares, for the protection of which the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen issued an ordinance on August 25, 1982. The mountain is mostly planted with mixed deciduous forest, mainly consisting of old linden trees, while on the southern part of the slope towards the river, especially warmth-loving shrubs and semi- arid lawns thrive. In order to prevent the semi-arid grass from overgrowing and thus to secure its biodiversity, a sheep farm is necessary. In the west of the mountain, at its foot, is the Antoniberg cave (Strudelloch), a washout of the Danube in the limestone rock.

Anthony's Chapel

Embedded in the landscape on the extensive platform of the mountain lies the Antonius Chapel, which was built in 1676 by the builder Baron Johann Dominik von Servi. A hermitage also belonged to the Antonius Chapel , of which only the remains of the foundation walls can be seen today.

The Antoniuskapelle as a former place of pilgrimage . To St. Anthony, was formerly the first place north of the Alps, where by papal decree of the Portiuncula - drain could be obtained. At this time on June 13th and on the 1st Sunday in August up to 15,000 believers made a pilgrimage to this place, where 10 to 15 clergymen confessed in the open air. For many emigrants to Transylvania or Hungary who left their homeland by raft on the Danube (see Donauschwaben ), this was often the last opportunity to receive the sacraments.

The Anna chapel was built in 1790/92 by Baron Josef Sebastian von Staader at a right angle to the left of the choir of the Antonius chapel. This is how a double chapel was created . For years there has been a sign on the front door of the Anna Church with the inscription: "No sense of burglary - church totally robbed"; the robbery of church art objects from the two chapels took place in March 1979.

The pilgrimage church of St. Antonius - St. Anna has not lost its attraction to this day, and many believers make pilgrimages to the Antoniberg for the annual Antonius Festival.

Crypt chapel

On the mountain is the crypt chapel of the noble families von Arco and Moy , built in 1852/55 under the direction of Professor von Ludwig Foltz from Munich . On 28 March 1855, the was killed on June 23, 1848 Bavarian Electoral Princess Maria Leopoldine , Archduchess of Austria-Este and countess of Arco, from the St. Michael parish church in one of the 30  crypt cells of the neo-Gothic chapel with Fialentürmchen reburied; Her second husband, Count Ludwig von Arco, was also buried here. Because the Antoniberg was Maria Leopoldine's favorite place, the son Aloys , who came from his second marriage to Count Ludwig von Arco, had the crypt chapel built for his mother's burial.
