Antonio Maria Traversi

Antonio Maria Traversi (born February 21, 1765 in Venice , † September 21, 1842 in Rome ) was an Italian curial archbishop and naturalist.

Life

He was ordained a priest on December 22, 1787 . As a doctor of theology and honorary canon of the Patriarchal Basilica of Venice , he was appointed professor of logic and metaphysics at the scuola dei chierici by the Senate of the Republic of Venice in 1796 . During the Napoleonic period he founded an educational institution. In 1807, the Austrian government appointed him Regens of the Philosophical College at the Liceo of Venice. As a personal friend of Mauro Cappellari OSBCam , who goes by the name of Gregory XVI. Was Pope, Antonio Maria Traversi was called to Rome, where in 1833 he was canon of the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and papal house prelate . He entered the service of the Curia in 1835 and was consultor of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics , the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs and the Holy Office .

On July 11, 1836, Antonio Maria Traversi was appointed titular archbishop of Nazianzus . He was ordained bishop on July 17, 1836 by Pope Gregory XVI. self; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Soglia Ceroni , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople , and Archbishop Giovanni Giacomo Sinibaldi , President of the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility . On the same day Antonio Maria Traversi became Papal Assistant to the Throne . Three years later, on February 21, 1839, he was promoted to Latin Patriarch of Constantinople .

Antonio Maria Traversi was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . His tomb was created by Giuseppe Fabris .
