history

French and British ships in the port of Antsiranana after the British occupation on May 13, 1942

The place is named after the Portuguese explorer Diogo Soares , who landed here in 1543. According to another theory, it was named after the sailors Diégo Dias and Fernan Soares.

In the 1880s, France became interested in the bay in order to set up a coal station for steamships here. On December 17, 1885, Queen Ranavalona III signed. a treaty that gave the French the protectorate over the bay, the surrounding area and the islands of Nosy Be and Ste. Marie de Madagascar transferred. After the complete takeover of Madagascar by France, the area was placed under the administration of the entire island in 1896.

In the following years Diégo-Suarez became one of the most important bases of the French Navy in the Indian Ocean . During the Russo-Japanese War , the Russian Baltic Fleet stopped here in 1904 on its way to Tsushima .

After the French collapse in June 1940, the French administration remained in the hands of forces loyal to Vichy and did not join de Gaulle's Free France . The Allies feared that Japan might succeed in taking control of the naval base , which is why Diégo-Suarez was occupied by British troops in May 1942 ( Operation Ironclad ). In actual fact, however, there was only an attack by Japanese micro-submarines on May 30, 1942 , which damaged the British battleship HMS Ramillies . However, there were no further events. The British handed the place back to France in 1946.

After Madagascar gained independence in 1960, the port lost its original importance, initially the French armed forces continued to use it until June 1974. Today it is the third largest port in the country and has a 300-meter berth and two loading cranes.

In 2018, at the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation in Beijing, the Malagasy government and the China Road and Bridge Corporation signed a letter of intent for the construction of a large port near Antsiranana.

The city is one of the Malagasy tourist destinations and is visited by cruise ships. With its large stone houses and wide streets, it offers a pleasant atmosphere that sets it apart from other cities in Madagascar.
