Arboretum

The Trsteno Arboretum is located about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia . As the only arboretum on the eastern Adriatic coast, it is the oldest collection of exotic trees and plants in the country.

The gardens are located along the coastal road between the villages of Orašac and Slano .

history

The arboretum has been documented on the estate of the Dubrovnik noble family Gučetić-Gozze since 1492 (the exact date of creation is not known). The aqueduct , which is still in use , was built in the same year. The garden has been in competition with the gardens of the Republic of Venice since its creation. The gardens were nationalized in 1948 and handed over to the Croatian Academy of Sciences two years later . Since 1962, the arboretum has been under state protection as a monument of garden art .

During the Croatian War, gunboats and fighter planes of the Yugoslav People's Army shelled the park in early October 1991, causing damage to numerous plants and buildings in the oldest part of the park. In 2000, two thirds of the facilities suffered damage from a fire, which was repaired in the following years.

For many years the forest scientist Mirko Vidaković , a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts , was the head ( predstojnik ) of this arboretum.

Gardens and plant species

The total area of the arboretum is 28  hectares . During the five centuries of its existence, elements of the Renaissance ( Neptune fountain and grotto), Baroque and Romanticism can be recognized in the landscape architecture . In addition to Mediterranean crops such as olives , figs or citrus trees, there are also numerous palm trees , eucalyptus trees , laurel trees , cacti and other exotic plants on several terraces . In 1858, an American linden tree was planted that grew to a height of over 30 meters.

The park comprises a total of around 400 plant species from a hundred plant families. The special attractions include two oriental plane trees , which are located in the central market square of Trsteno. Both are more than five hundred years old. These are giant trees, unique in Europe, with a trunk diameter of over five meters.
