history

Prehistory: Foundation of the Wertheim State Archives

The Wertheim State Archive was set up as early as 1978 to house the Löwenstein-Wertheim archives acquired by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1975. On October 18, 1977, the Baden-Württemberg Council of Ministers decided to establish the independent Wertheim State Archives on January 1, 1978. The Wertheim City Archives were soon incorporated into it. This smaller network paved the way for the idea of an archive network in the Main-Tauber district, which became a reality about ten years later with three partners.

Merger of three partners to form the archive network

With the Baden-Württemberg State Archives Act of July 27, 1987, the districts were obliged to set up their own archives. As a result, it was agreed to move the district archive to Bronnbach. On December 7, 1988, under the auspices of the Wertheim State Archives, the Main-Tauber archive network was set up, in which three partners - the state of Baden-Württemberg, the city of Wertheim and the Main-Tauber district - have joined forces to carry out a joint task.

This made the Main-Tauber archive network the first archive network of its kind in Germany and, from the start, served as a model for numerous other networks with different partners and constellations. While the state archive as a historical archive does not have any significant access, the district office and the town halls of individual municipalities that have brought their city and community archives to the district archive regularly submit documents to the archive. To meet the growing need for storage, a new magazine with 3.5 kilometers of archive space was inaugurated in March 2018. For this purpose, 1.6 million euros were invested in the archive and the building renovation. As participants in the archive network, these costs were divided between the district and the Wertheim, Assamstadt, Freudenberg, Külsheim and Werbach groups according to their share of use. In addition, two anniversaries were celebrated in the adjacent Bronnbach Abbey: 40 years of the Wertheim State Archives and the 30th anniversary of the Main-Tauber archive network since its foundation.
