Career
Ari Ahonen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of JYP Jyväskylä , where he was active until 1999. First, however, the goalkeeper moved within his Finnish homeland to HIFK Kelsinki , for whose professional team he stood between the posts in the SM-liiga for two years . In the summer of 2001 he was ordered by his Draft Team New Jersey Devils to North America, but played in the next five years exclusively for their farm team Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League . The 2006/07 season he started with the Espoo Blues in the SM-liiga, but moved to Jokerit Helsinki after only five games within the league . With Jokerit he reached the playoff final at the end of the season, in which he and his team were defeated by Kärpät Oulu .
For the 2007/08 season Ahonen was committed by Frölunda HC from the Swedish Elitserien . There he lost a regular place in the following season , whereupon he returned to the SM-liiga, where he joined KalPa Kuopio . He played for KalPa for over two years before the Finn received a contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from the Continental Hockey League in November 2011 . At Magnitka he was the regular goalkeeper until the end of the 2012/13 season and impressed with good statistical values. In June 2013 he left the club and moved within the league to Barys Astana . There he shared the position of goalkeeper with Vitaly Jeremejew and came to 37 KHL missions.
From August 2014 he was under contract with Admiral Vladivostok , but was released in October of the same year. He was then without a club before he was obliged Ässät Pori from the Liiga for the 2015/16 season . Ultimately, Ahonen was under contract with the Ässät until 2017 and was used a total of 39 times in the Liiga. He ended his career in the 2017/18 season with the Danish first division club Herning Blue Fox .
