Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus is a species of plant in the genus Ariocarpus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors Prince Vasili Viktorovich Kotschubei (1812–1850).

description

The mostly single growing Ariocarpus koschoubeyanus does not protrude from the soil surface. The dark olive-green shoots , which are flattened at the top and slightly sunken in the middle, reach a diameter of 3 to 7 centimeters. The spirally arranged warts are elongated at the base, become broadly triangular and taper towards the tip. They are 5 to 13 millimeters long and 3 to 10 millimeters wide. A woolly furrow extends across the center of the areoles . There are no thorns .

The flowers are 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter and are usually purple in color. However, at least one population with white flowers is known. The sepals are green or brownish, somewhat fleshy and often with two columns. The petals are lanceolate-spatulate, pointed, blunt, or even with margins. The stamens , stylus and stigma are white. The elongated fruits are 8 to 18 millimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

The distribution area of Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus extended from the Mexican state of Coahuila to the south to Querétaro and includes parts of the states of Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí , Nuevo León and Tamaulipas , where it grows preferentially on loamy plains.

The species was collected for the first time around 1840 by Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinsky (1780–1855) and sent to Europe. There it was described by Charles Lemaire in 1842 as Anhalonium kotschoubeyanum . Karl Moritz Schumann assigned the species to the genus Ariocarpus in 1898 .

A nomenclature synonym is Roseocactus kotschoubeyanus (Lem.) A. Berger (1925).

Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus is threatened and was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species. In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. classified as low risk.

ingredients

In Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus were Hordenine and n-methyltyramine proven.

Ethnobotanical use

The locals use the slime from the roots of the plants as glue to repair pottery . The plants are also used externally to treat wounds .
