The Arklow-A-class is a coaster class of "Ferus Smit 8500-1A" type. The ships are being built at the Dutch shipyard Ferus Smit for the Irish shipping company Arklow Shipping.

description

The series is based on the “Ferus Smit 8400” ship type built from 2013 to 2015 as the Arklow B-Class . The two series differ primarily in the bow shape and the Kort nozzle with which the A-Class ships are equipped. The hull is also reinforced with ice ( ice class 1A).

The ships are from a four-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer Caterpillar : (Type MaK  2,000 6M25C)  kW power driven. The engine acts on a controllable pitch propeller with a Kort nozzle. The ships are equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 380 kW. A shaft generator driven by the main engine with an output of 389 kW and two generators driven by Yanmar diesel engines with an output of 220 kW each are available for power generation. An emergency generator with 104 kW output was also installed.

The deckhouse is in the rear of the ships. There are two cargo holds in front of the deckhouse , which are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The hatch covers can be moved using a hatch cart. Most of the holds are box-shaped. Cargo space 1 tapers towards the front. Load space 1 is 37.2 m long, load space 2 is 49.5 m long. The rooms are each 12.33 m wide and 9.65 m high. The volume of hold 1 is 4034.9 m³, that of hold 2 is 5867.5 m². Cargo space 2 can be subdivided using bulkheads. The bulkheads can be erected in six positions. The tank top can be loaded with 20 t / m², the hatch cover with 1.75 t / m².

The ships are equipped with nine individual cabins for the crew members and a further reserve cabin . The reserve cabin can also be used as an infirmary .
