The Arklow B-Class is a six-unit coaster class of the "Ferus Smit 8400" type. The ships were built at the Dutch shipyard Ferus Smit for the Irish shipping company Arklow Shipping.

The ships are from a four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer Caterpillar driven. The MaK 8M25 motors have an output of 2,660 kW and act on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ships can thus reach around 13 kn . Two Sisu diesel engines, each with an output of 213 kW, which drive two Stamford generators , and a shaft generator with an output of 389 kW (486 kVA apparent output ) are available for generating electricity. A diesel generator with an output of 90 kW was installed as an emergency generator. The ships are equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 380 kW.
The deckhouse is in the rear of the ships. It is set up for a crew of nine . There are two cargo holds in front of the deckhouse , which are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The hatch covers are moved using a hatch trolley. The holds are 9.65 m high. The hatch of the front cargo space is 34.86 m long and 12.33 m wide, that of the rear cargo space is 49.58 m long and 12.33 m wide. The front cargo space is box-shaped at 25.58 m. In the front area it tapers to 9.28 m in length by 5.70 m in width, in the rear area it has a little underwater . The volume is 4,034.7 m³. The rear cargo area is box-shaped at 44.08 m. In the rear area there is a 5.50 m long slope that rises towards the rear. The room can be further divided using a bulkhead that can be erected in five positions. The volume is 5,867.8 m². The tank cover can be loaded with 15 t / m², the hatch cover with 1.75 t / m².
The ships were built by the shipyard with an intermediate deck, which can be loaded with 3.5 t / m². According to their ship descriptions, the shipping company operates the ships without an intermediate deck and with only one bulkhead in hold 2.
The ships have a pointed bow shape without a bulbous bow, referred to by the shipyard as the "canoe bow". This should lead to a reduced water resistance.
The ship type was later developed to the type " Ferus Smit 8500-1A ".

The ships sail under the flag of the Netherlands with their home port in Rotterdam .
