Arnaud Danjean (born February 11, 1971 in Louhans , Saône-et-Loire department ) is a French politician of the conservative party UMP and a member of the European Parliament .

Professional career

After graduating from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po) in 1992, Danjean worked for the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure (DGSE), the French foreign intelligence service . From 1995 to 1996 he served on various missions in Sarajevo , including during the siege of Sarajevo and the signing of the Dayton Agreement . From June 1996 to September 1998 he was a member of the French embassy in Sarajevo to monitor the implementation of the peace accords, the security situation, the prosecution of war crimes and the existing Islamist networks.

From 1998 he was responsible for the Balkans at the headquarters of the French Defense Ministry in Paris and took part in the conferences on the Kosovo issue. From June 1999 he was in Kosovo himself, where he worked with Bernard Kouchner , who at the time was head of the UN Mission in Kosovo ( UNMIK ). From 2000 Danjean was back in Paris, in the same year he was awarded the Ordre national du Mérite .

From 2002 Danjean was the French Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva . In 2004 he became an advisor in the French Foreign Ministry, first under Michel Barnier , then under Philippe Douste-Blazy .

Political career

In the French parliamentary elections in 2007 Danjean stood for the conservative party UMP and was finally defeated in his constituency with less than 400 votes against the socialist mandate holder Arnaud Montebourg . After he had canceled his expected participation in the 2008 local elections "for personal reasons", he entered the UMP list again in the 2009 European elections in France and won a seat in the European Parliament .

Here he became a member of the Group of the European People's Party (EPP) as well as in the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET). He was also elected chairman of the AFET Sub-Committee on Security and Defense (SEDE). As a member, he is also in the delegation for relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo . Danjean is deputy in the Committee on Budgets and in the delegation for relations with Afghanistan .
