Arnold Alexandrovich Alschwang (born September 19 . Jul / 1. October  1898 . Greg in Kiev ; † 28. July 1960 in Moscow ) was a Ukrainian - Russian pianist , composer , musicologist and music educator .

Life

Alschwang, son of the Kiev 1st guild merchant Alexander Aronowitsch Alschwang, attended business school. 1914–1915 he was exiled to the Olonez Governorate for making unpatriotic statements . He then studied at the Kiev Conservatory in Heinrich Neuhaus' piano class, graduating in 1920 as a pianist. He then studied composition with Reinhold Glière and Boleslaw Jaworskyj , graduating in 1922. He also directed the military music school in Kiev (1919–1921). He then taught at the Kiev Conservatory (1923–1925) and at the Moscow Brjussow Institute for Literature and Art (1923–1924) and at the Moscow Krassnopressnensky Technical College (now the Automobile College) (1925). He gave concerts as a pianist from 1923 to 1931. He taught music history at the Moscow Conservatory (1930–1934). In 1944 Alschwang received his doctorate in art history .

Alschwang composed a symphony (1922), a symphonic poem on a Ukrainian folk theme (1926), piano pieces, choral music , romances and incidental music . Alschwang has published books on Claude Debussy (1935), Richard Wagner (1938), Alexander Weprik (1939), Alexander Scriabin (1945), Modest Mussorgsky (1946) and Peter Tchaikovsky (1959). After his death, the anthology was published on the works of Debussy and Ravel (1963). In the series on remarkable people he published a book on Ludwig van Beethoven in 1940 , which he then worked out into a monograph (1952). In 1963, the revised and expanded edition appeared, which was reprinted in 1966 and 1971 and also translated into Hungarian , Estonian and Romanian .
