Arroyo Grande Valley AVA (recognized January 4, 1990) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the administrative area of San Luis Obispo County , southeast of the city of San Luis Obispo . The wine-growing region is part of the parent Central Coast AVA and borders the Edna Valley AVA . The almost 26 km long valley benefits from an east-west orientation. As a result, the cooling mists and sea breezes of the Pacific Ocean can have a moderating effect on the climate . In the offshore areas near Lopez Lake , the varieties Zinfandel , Petite Sirah and some varieties known from the Rhône Valley thrive . Under the influence of the mist, the early-ripening Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive in the coastal area .
