Edna Valley AVA (recognized since May 12, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the administrative area of San Luis Obispo County , southeast of the city of San Luis Obispo and north of the city of Arroyo Grande . The wine-growing region is part of the parent Central Coast AVA and borders the Arroyo Grande Valley AVA . The valley is bounded south by Lake Lopez and north by Islay Hill and benefits from an east-west orientation. As a result, the cooling mists and sea breezes of the Pacific Ocean can have a moderating effect on the climate . In addition, it is shadowed to the west by the Santa Lucia Mountains . As a result, the early ripening grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and, to a lesser extent, the Syrah variety thrive here . The grape material of the Edna Valley AVA is often processed with that of the Arroyo Grande Valley AVA. If both are expanded together in a blend , the wine must be marketed with the name of the superordinate American Viticultural Area .
