Arthur Charles Wellesley, 4th Duke of Wellington KG , GCVO (born March 15, 1849 , † June 18, 1934 in Ewhurst Park , Basingstoke , Hampshire ) was a British officer , peer and politician .

life and career

He came from the Wellesley family and was a paternal grandson of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . He was the third and youngest son of Major-General Lord Charles Wellesley from his marriage to Augusta Sophia Anne Pierrepont. His older brother Arthur died in infancy on July 7, 1846. His next older brother Henry Wellesley, 3rd Duke of Wellington , inherited the title of 3rd Duke of Wellington in August 1884 , after which Arthur Charles and his sisters on November 17, 1884 Received protocol status of children of a duke , with which the name was added "Lord" Arthur Charles Wellesley.

He was educated at Eton College from 1861 to 1866 . On June 13, 1868 he bought an officer position as Ensign and Lieutenant of the Grenadier Guards and rose in this unit to the rank of Colonel , to which he was raised on August 1, 1887. On October 28, 1900 he was put on half pay and retired from active military service.

On February 11, 1901, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire. On May 2, 1902 he was accepted as Knight Grand Cross in the Royal Victorian Order and on August 8, 1902 as Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter .

When his childless older brother Henry died on June 8, 1900, he inherited his title of nobility as the 4th Duke of Wellington and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .

On October 24, 1872 he married Kathleen Emily Bulkeley Williams († 1927). He had six children with her:

  • Lady Evelyn Kathleen Wellesley (1873–1922), ⚭ 1900 Hon. Robert James (1873–1960), son of Walter James, 2nd Baron Northbourne ;
  • Arthur Charles Wellesley, 5th Duke of Wellington (1876-1941);
  • Lord Richard Wellesley (1879 – ⚔ 1914), ⚭ 1908 Louise Nesta Pamela FitzGerald (1889–1946), daughter of Sir Maurice FitzGerald, 2nd Baronet;
  • Gerald Wellesley, 7th Duke of Wellington (1885–1972), ⚭ 1914 Dorothy Violet Ashton (1885–1956);
  • Lord George Wellesley (1889-1967), ⚭ (1) 1917 Louise Nesta Pamela FitzGerald (1889-1946), widow of his above brother Richard, ⚭ (2) 1955 Jean McGillvray;
  • Lady Eileen Wellesley (1887–1952), ⚭ 1916 Cuthbert Julian Orde (1888–1968).
