Arvid Boecker (* 1964 in Wuppertal ) is a German painter and curator . He is a representative of Concrete Art and deals with color field painting .

Life

Arvid Boecker studied art history at the University of Trier from 1987 to 1989 and then moved to the Saar College of Fine Arts in Saarbrücken. There he studied with professors Jochen Gerz , Bodo Baumgarten and Ulrike Rosenbach until 1994 . In the following years he repeatedly went on long work trips and a to London (ACME Studios, 1994–1995), to Katwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands (1995–1996), to the Isle of Skye in 2005, to La Ciotat in southern France in 2006, and in 2018 he was in Paris for a longer period of work.

Boecker has been a member of the Saarland Artists Association since 1996 and lives and works in Heidelberg. In the local elections in Heidelberg on May 26, 2019, he will run for the independent list Heidelberg on the move (HiB) in 35th place.

To the artistic work

Arvid Boecker's theme as an artist is color itself. He uses oil paints , which he makes himself from pigments and applies to canvases. Since priming the canvases requires longer and longer drying times, Boecker always creates entire rows with the same dimensions, on which he then works alternately. He numbers the pictures and gives them a hashtag , for example like this: "# 1103". He describes these series as "picture families". Arvid Boecker determines right from the start how he handles the surface, divides it up for certain paint jobs. His works are always either rectangular or square . Since 2014, Boecker has been concentrating on the 50 × 40 centimeter format, which he divides into two fields with a vertical line, which he gives different colors. It is applied in up to 40 layers, partly glazed , partly pasty . Arvid Boecker uses squeegees to remove older layers of paint or applies new layers of paint with a painting knife . This process can take up to a year to complete.

During this long period of time his images mature . Boecker often interrupts work on a picture to allow him to dry off. Working on a work is therefore a process in which the aim is to ascertain one's own awareness of color and its effects. The question behind this is always how what effect occurs to the viewer, how do the colors interact with each other to what result: “So the painter sometimes becomes a researcher in his own work, looking for old layers and conditions like an archaeologist and then reviving them brings. He is creator and destroyer in one, lets arise and extinguishes again, creates and discards. But not on a whim, but always with a view to the success of the picture as a whole. ”The work, which was created in long work processes, clearly shows the traces of its creation. B. through shading - darker layers of paint were painted over with light ones - or through scratches that allow a view of the older layers of paint.

Boecker also designs entire room concepts, such as B. 2012 for the Städtische Galerie Neunkirchen . For this exhibition he created 40 square works, which were themselves divided into smaller squares and painted with different colors. In addition, he structured the exhibition space with specially made colored stools and wall markings with colored adhesive tape that stretch from the wall to the floor and form a rectangle. This overall spatial installation should enable the viewer to reflect on how he perceives the works of art in the room.

In 2016 Boecker created a triptych for the Sunnisheim Collegiate Church in Sinsheim , consisting of three images of the same format that were specially created for this room.

Boecker sees himself as a "traveling observer". His stays abroad, such as B. 1995 to Katwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, 2005 to the Isle of Skye and 2006 to La Ciotat are research trips for him in matters of light and colors. An international artist colony existed in Katwijk as early as the 19th century . La Ciotat in the south of France has also always attracted artists. It is the sharply delimited contrasts created by the southern light conditions by the sea and the harbor atmosphere that fascinated the artists at the beginning of the 20th century. The Isle of Skye is famous for its foggy coastline, which often makes the light diffuse and shimmering. Boecker processes all these impulses and experiences on site in his works, so that he says of himself: “What I paint in my pictures are memories.” However, not memories in the sense of landscape pictures, but memories that every artist unconsciously or consciously with and that influence his art. The long duration of the creation of his works allows Arvid Boecker a kind of meditative work. In the months up to the completion of a work, he can reflect in detail on the effects of the application of paint, he can put his work aside for a while and continue working on another, he can keep looking and working on the canvases with the help of squeegees and spatulas for so long work on it until it reproduces the exact expression he wants. When viewed from a distance, they are sometimes almost monochrome works and only when you look closer do you recognize the multitude of different layers that the artist implemented in the work. Not only does the production of his art take a lot of time, but the viewer is also required to take his time to perceive all aspects of the work: "Boecker's works radiate calm and strength - and even if he consciously avoids any appearance of anything pictorial, they nevertheless offer a projection surface for a multitude of associations. "

His project room in Heidelberg

Arvid Boecker has been running a project space in Heidelberg since 2015 - boeckercontemporary . Boecker's intention was to establish a “place of encounter with contemporary art” in Heidelberg. Four to six exhibitions of "internationally established positions in non-representational painting" should be organized per year. To this end, he worked with independent curators around the world, but also curated some exhibitions himself. The idea behind the project space was also to ensure more networking in the region and thus to contribute to an active exhibition life. Since 2017 he has been realizing exhibitions curated by him in different locations, e.g. B. in the gallery Oqbo in Berlin (2017, Better late than ugly ) and in the Museum St. Wendel (2019, Breathe ).
