The Asahi class ( Japanese あ さ ひ 型 護衛艦 , Asahi-gata goeikan ) is a class of two anti-submarine destroyers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF). She is the second grade with that name in the JMSDF . Name predecessor was a class of two escort destroyers of the American Cannon class that stood from 1955 to 1975 in service.
General
The Asahi- class is a further development of the previous Akizuki-class and finally replaces the remaining destroyers of the Hatsuyuki-class in fleet service. They serve as escorts for the Aegis destroyers ( Kongō and Atago classes ) and the helicopter carriers ( Hyūga and Izumo classes ) of the self-defense forces and are intended to protect them against submarine attacks.
