The 2017/18 season is the ninth season of the second highest football league in Mexico since the Liga de Ascenso was founded, which has been officially called Ascenso MX since the summer of 2013 .
While the preseason was contested by 18 teams, the league was reduced to 16 participants in the summer of 2017, as was common in the 2015/16 season .
The reason for the reduction was that although the Lobos de la BUAP rose to the first division at the end of the preseason and the Loros de Colima were relegated to the third division , on the other hand there was no promoted or relegated player to take his place in the second division took. The first division relegated Chiapas FC retired due to financial problems in the third division and the third division promoted Tlaxcala FC did not notice his promotion because he does not have a second division venue.
Also no longer represented in the league is Coras FC Deportivo Tepic , whose license was sold to a newly founded franchise called Atlético Zacatepec . This replaces the construct called Zacatepec Siglo XXI , which was eliminated at the end of the season , both of which are in the tradition of the two-time Mexican champions Club Deportivo Zacatepec . Atlético San Luis , which was founded in 2013 and withdrew from the league for one season at the end of the 2015/16 season, is back.
The unlucky fellow
The season began on Friday, July 21, 2017 with the match between CF Atlante and the Cafetaleros de Tapachula (4: 1). The first goal of the new second division season was scored by Lizandro Echeverría , who gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the first minute and followed up with the goal to make it 2-0 in the twelfth minute. The two-time goalscorer had to pay dearly for his success, however, because Echeverría hit the goal post so badly on his second goal that he broke his right foot and was therefore out for several months.
While the away goals rule was used to determine the winner in the previous rounds in the event of a tie , this does not apply in the final. In the final, after extra time, a penalty shoot-out was required, which the Alebrijes won 4-2.
The cross table shows the results of all games this season. The name of the home team is listed in the left column, a short name for the visiting team in the top row.
In the overall season finals, Alebrijes Oaxaca (Master of Apertura) and Cafetaleros Tapachula (Master of Clausura) faced each other. After the Cafetaleros had already won the home game on May 5, 2018 with 5: 1, a week later their narrow 2: 1 victory was of no use to the Alebrijes, so the Cafetaleros ended the season as overall winners. Nevertheless, as a non-certified team, they were not allowed to take part in the promotion to the MX league achieved through sport and are therefore also represented in the second division in the 2018/19 season.
