Asta Südhaus (* in the 19th century; † in the 20th century) was a German reciter and voice actress .

Life

Südhaus was probably born towards the end of the 19th century. According to her memoirs, she grew up as an only child in a wealthy family in Szczecin in Pomerania ; the father worked in a bank. She first attended the Maria Friedländer girls' school at Augustastraße 54 in Stettin, then the school of a commercial councilor who called himself “Uncle Martin” and, according to her own reports, belonged to the Wandervogel movement.

Allegedly, she was married off by her mother when a working class family was to be moved to her parents' home in the period after the First World War . A little later, the Südhaus family sold the property. Südhaus' first marriage soon ended in divorce. Südhaus, who had initially toyed with the idea of studying art, took acting lessons from the head director of the Szczecin City Theater after her divorce and made her debut on the Szczecin stage when a colleague failed. But no stage career developed from this. The next teacher in Südhaus' was a former youthful hero of the Szczecin Theater. He hoped to find his student in Landsberg an der Warthe or Karlsruhe , but both auditions were unsuccessful. Thereupon Südhaus started reciting.

Asta Südhaus took part in the move after her father was transferred to Berlin . There she called on Harald Braun , the head of the evangelical morning celebrations on the radio. He was taken with her voice, as was Dr. Würzburger, in whose quiet hour she was used. Allegedly, her radio career ended when Leo Kestenberg suggested that she join the SPD , which Asta Südhaus rejected. Leon Hirsch then gave her a chance in his cabaret, where she made her debut with an appearance on § 218 and love poems. The appearance was positively discussed in the 12 o'clock newspaper . When Goetz Otto Stoffregen suggested she join the NSDAP , she followed this invitation.

Südhaus was a sought-after artist in the Third Reich and toured many times . Olavi Paavolainen described one of her appearances: “Asta Südhaus, who is considered the best reciter in the Third Reich and is enthusiastic about the“ Nordic idea ”, lived up to her reputation. With a magnificent, almost masculine-sounding chest voice [...] she presented her huge “Nordic” program to us - with a stiff body, her head proudly thrown back, the gaze of her large gray-blue eyes directed upwards ”. He certified her “Germanic temperament” and “stylistically pure recitation technique”, but was dissatisfied with the selection of the recited works. From 1938 she was involved in several major events, so she appeared as Germany in the Lustgarten in an epic verse on the subject of Germany, which, according to her memoir, a "young labor service leader" had written and which she thought was great. This was followed by an appearance in a local poem by Kurt Freywaldt for the Leuna -Werke and one at the 700th anniversary celebration in Neuruppin . In addition, Südhaus was involved in the Bayreuth Festival in 1938 . She also had numerous engagements during the war, many of them abroad. Under the direction of Carl Schuricht , she was involved in an event for Edvard Grieg's 100th birthday .

Towards the end of the Second World War , Südhaus was still able to leave Berlin with some luggage and all of her money , under the pretext of having to follow an engagement in Dannenberg on the Elbe . Her memory book gives no clear information about the number of her husbands, but she had been married to Hanno Konopath since the prewar period , who was able to leave Berlin some time after his wife and met her again in Dannenberg. After stops in Bremen , Hamburg and Ilten , Südhaus, now again in Hamburg, carried out its denazification . In 1947 she was able to perform again. Konopath worked in Hamburg for Ernst Friedländer in the European Union ; according to his wife, the European flag , which was created in the 1950s, was based on his design. Südhaus continued to work as a reciter. She described her participation in the world premiere of Humphrey Searle's melodrama The Riverrun in Düsseldorf , whose text was by James Joyce , under the baton of Hermann Scherchen, as the most exciting appearance of her life .

In the post-war period she also worked as a voice actress, in 1950 for Lily Kann as Minna Cesare in On the wrong track and in 1955 as Amelia for Evelyn Kerry in Ladykillers .

Hanno Konopath died after 22 years of marriage to Asta Südhaus. This continued to work for a few years after the husband's death. After a tour of Yugoslavia, she said goodbye to the stage. Her memoirs were published in 1978, at which time she was living in Baden-Baden .
