Astrid Beckmann (* December 20, 1957 in Berlin as Astrid Rautenberg ) is a German physicist , professor of mathematics and mathematics didactics and for many years university rector.

Life

Astrid Beckmann comes from Berlin; During her school days she received first and second prizes in the federal mathematics competition . After graduating from high school in 1976, she studied mathematics and physics at the Free University of Berlin . Her physical thesis on resistance measurements on metallic connections was written at the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy .

After successfully completing her legal traineeship in Darmstadt , she worked as a physicist at the physics institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Beckmann worked there in the “Crystal Laboratory” in the working group to which Gerd Binnig ( Nobel Prize for Physics 1986 ) also belonged, questions about materials research, specifically about rare earth compounds.

1989 doctorate Beckmann at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Giessen to Dr. rer. nat. on a topic to prove (with Heinz Schwartze and Günter Pickert ). Beckmann continued her work as a math teacher, initially as a scholarship holder from the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art . From 1994 to 2003 she was a teacher for mathematics and physics in Lemgo (East Westphalia) and at the University of Hanover , where she completed her habilitation in 2003 : venia legendi Didaktik der Mathematik (development of a model concept for interdisciplinary mathematics / teaching, also in connection with physics, German and computer science).

After a brief period as a private lecturer at the University of Hanover , Astrid Beckmann was appointed professor for mathematics and mathematics didactics at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education in 2003. From 2003 to 2005 she headed the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science there, from 2005 to 2008 she was Vice-Rector for Research, Development and International Relations. Beckmann is - together with Claus Michelsen / Denmark and Bharath Sriraman / USA - initiator of the international interdisciplinary MACAS conferences, which started in 2005 with MACAS 1 at the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd. a. in Odense / Denmark and Moncton / Canada (Viktor Freiman) had (MACAS: Mathematics and its Connections to the Arts and Sciences). The transatlantic network “Network for a better education in mathematics, science and arts” with the universities of Montana / USA and Moncton, of which Beckmann is a founding member, also emerged from this initiative. From 2010 to 2018 she was rector of the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education . Beckmann has been teaching at the University of Ulm since 2007 and in 2016 she received an honorary doctorate (Dr. h. C.) From the National Linguistic University of Kiev.

Beckmann cooperated or led numerous projects, including a. also the project “A mathematical way through my city” to promote the interest and image of mathematics. From 2006 to 2010 Beckmann managed the successful European ScienceMath project with partners from Denmark, Finland and Slovenia (coordination PH Schwäbisch Gmünd). In autumn 2009 Beckmann was unanimously elected rector of the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education. From 2010 to 2018 she held the office. As rector of one of the six universities of education / University of Education (university status / doctorate and habilitation law), she represented and headed one of the few educational science university institutions in Germany. From 2011 to 2015 Beckmann was Deputy Chairwoman of the Regional Rectors' Conference of the Universities of Education (LRK), from April 2015 to 2017 Chairwoman of the LRK. As a board member of the State Rectors 'Conference of the PHs, she also represented the universities of teacher education in the Senate of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).

Beckmann has three grown children. She achieved various athletic successes in track and field disciplines, especially in long jump and shot put . This also includes victories, placements and participation in city championships (Berlin 1975, Lemgo 1999), German championships and world championships (Masters in St. Sebastian 2005).

Numerous scientific publications and monographs come from Beckmann ; She is also the editor of national and international individual works, book series, proceedings and journals. Various doctoral works were created under the supervision of Astrid Beckmann.
