The Athena was a factory ship on which freshly caught fish is processed. The 89 meter long Athena was built in 1992. Fires broke out on the ship in 2008 and 2010. Before the fire in 2010, the ship was repaired in a Chinese shipyard.

Ltd. sold in Athens , Greece and renamed to Athena . In the same year it was sold to the South Korean Bergen Industries & Fishing Corporation . The ship changed hands again in 2005: First it was sold to Davlos Shipping Ltd. and in the same year to Atlantic Wave Co. Ltd. sold.

During this time the ship was renamed Skadi . It was later bought by the Ocean Group Faroes Ltd. acquired in Hósvík and renamed back to the name Athena . In 2008 the name of the ship was changed to Athena II , and again to Athena in 2009 . The ship was last registered in Hósvík.

Fire 2010

On October 27, 2010, a fire broke out on board the ship en route to a fishing area in the Irish Sea around 425 kilometers southwest of the English Isles of Scilly . According to the shipping company, the fire broke out around 6.20 a.m. local time in a storage room for packaging material.

The rescue operation on the burning ship was made more difficult by the fact that the ship was far offshore. At the time of the accident, the distance to the next major coastal promontory of Penmarch in Brittany was around 500 kilometers. As the BBC reported on October 27, 2010, the captain of the Athena had ordered that 81 crew members should board the lifeboats . The weather conditions at that time had been calm. Another 17 crew members later followed in lifeboats. The remaining 13 crew members remained on board in order to continue fighting the fire, which had already been brought under control at that time. All the castaways were rescued by the container ship Vega , which was on its way from Antwerp to Jamaica and had received the emergency call from Athena , and brought to Falmouth . In May 2011, the captain and crew of the Vega were awarded the bronze medal for rescue from distress by the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS).

During the course of October 28, specially trained firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Service Cornwall were flown in to the Athena . At the time, the fire on the ship had not yet been extinguished.

During the rescue operation of the British Coast Guard , a Dassault Falcon 50 , a long-haul aircraft of the French Navy , was used to establish radio contact between the location of the rescue operation and the MRCC in Falmouth. A Navy SAR helicopter was requested by the 771st Naval Air Squadron in Cornwall but did not participate in the rescue operation. It was held ready for eventual use in the Isles of Scilly.

The crew of the Athena consisted of sailors from China, Peru, Russia and Scandinavian countries.

In August 2011 the ship, which had been declared a total constructive loss, was towed to Esbjerg in Denmark for scrapping.
