history

Founded in 1871 during the railroad construction by the Texas and Pacific Railway , Atlanta was named after the city of Atlanta , Georgia , the hometown of most of the early settlers. The first post office was opened in the same year. In 1885 the town had around 1,500 residents and had several shops and a weekly newspaper, the Citizens' Journal . Until 1890 the timber industry was the most important branch of industry.

As a result of the Great Depression , the population and the number of shops decreased. From 1935 onwards, the effects of the Depression were mitigated by oil discoveries and oil production by the Rodessa Oilfield . In the years that followed, both the population and the number of shops increased again and in 1940 the first hospital opened.
