The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 is a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup held at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton , Georgia . Between 1987 and 2001 the race was the last of each season and usually the event in which the championship was decided.

The race of the 1992 season was Richard Petty's last race and the debut of Jeff Gordon . With six drivers left standing chances for the championship, this edition is considered by many fans as one of the best NASCAR races. Alan Kulwicki , who finished second in the race, beat Bill Elliott , the race winner, by just ten points in the race for the championship.

For 2001 the event was planned as the season finale, but it was only the penultimate race of the season. The New Hampshire 300 has been postponed from its original date of September 16 to the Friday after Thanksgiving due to the September 11th terrorist attacks . In the 2002 season, the race was postponed to late October. From 2003 it was the first with a qualifying at night. It has been the only race of the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway since 2011. The spring date was given to Kentucky Speedway , which has the same owner as Speedway Motorsports .
