action

Vera is a few days before her 25th birthday, when she will inherit the estate of her deceased father. So far the estate has been managed by the manager Heinz Huber and Vera has received part of the estate's income. Since the death of her father, who always spoiled her, she lived with her uncle. He thinks it is wrong that Vera is only interested in the money from the estate, but has not seen everything on site for years. Well, five days before the takeover of the estate, Heinz Huber went to town to clarify the first formalities. His car is hit by the fast-moving Vera and both poison each other on the street without realizing who they are dealing with. Vera has every reason to be uneasy: she doesn't have a driver's license herself and the car belongs to her lover, the seedy Kurt von Arnoldi. He pretends to be rich and regularly goes horse races with Vera, where his horse Diana often wins. He wants to give Vera Diana as a present for the planned engagement and after the marriage with her money not only pay off his high debts, but also breed horses. For this purpose, large parts of the estate forest are to be cleared and most of the surrounding fields are to be sold. Vera innocently agrees with his suggestions.

At the decision of her uncle, Vera and Kurt go to the estate a few days before taking over the inheritance. Here she is joyfully received. Administrator Heinz recognizes her as the ruthless driver and she recognizes him too. Both initially keep silent about the incident. Vera quickly makes it clear that she does not intend to keep the legacy as a whole. This causes unrest in the area, as numerous farmers have their houses on lease of the estate. Vera wants to cancel the lease first. For example, forest keeper Borstl would have to leave his house after 18 years. There is tentative resistance. Borstl develops the plan to couple Vera and Heinz, but Heinz does not think of marrying Vera as the plan provides. Heinz Vera dutifully shows her property, the extensive fields and forest landscapes, and she takes a liking to the area. She dismisses Heinz's references that her plan will destroy all the beauty as mischief and does not want to hear them. A storm approaches on one of the rides and Heinz and Vera save themselves in Heinz's hut in the forest. At first there seems to be a rendezvous, especially since Borstl not only kidnaps the horses, but also gives them both a food basket. However, when Heinz accuses Vera of being a superficial person, it breaks. Heinz quits that evening and wants to leave the next morning - the morning when Vera will take over her inheritance.

Shortly before the opening of the will, the debt collector Welisch appears at Vera and Kurt and shows Vera a promissory note signed in front of her that Kurt had given him as a guarantee. Vera, however, never signed such a bill - Kurt forged her signature to buy time and be able to pay off his debts with her money after the marriage. Welisch now receives the horse Daisy from Kurt, the only valuable item in his possession. Kurt realizes that he has played too high and leaves Vera and the estate. The opening of the will comes as a surprise. Vera's father stipulated that Vera only received the property if she had never announced in advance that she would sell the property in parts. However, since she did just that, the entire inheritance goes to the manager Heinz. As before, Vera is only entitled to part of the proceeds from the estate. Borstl and the men from the village rush to the railway line and stop the moving train. They get Heinz off the train and tell him that he is the heir to the estate. Heinz, in turn, rushes off to get Vera back, who has now also left. It comes to a happy ending.

criticism

For the film service , Auf der Grüne Wiese was a "homeland-based operetta adaptation that neither children's choir nor salon costume group can miss."

Gertraud Steiner compared the subject matter of the film with that of A man belongs in the house (1945): “If a woman happens to inherit a large business, she is supposedly not in a position to run it. The only solution is to marry someone who is familiar with this property. ”At the same time, the constellation of men - the down-to-earth steward against the seedy bon vivant and deceiver -“ come straight from a Heimat art novel ”.
