action

The scientist Dr. Stephen Black is found dead on a bus. As revealed by Hobson's investigation, he was murdered.

The tour bus he was found on also went to Crevecoeur Hall, where someone was shot in an aftermath of a battle that same day. Lewis does not doubt that the events were connected. While he is investigating the victim's apartment himself, he sends Hathaway to Crevecoeur Hall, where he interrogates the noble family. Hathaway himself lived as a child on the estate that belongs to Crevecoeur Hall.
That same night, the estate manager Grahame, whose wife disappeared without a trace 10 years ago, is shot. Everything points to suicide . When love letters are found in Black's apartment from Grahame's wife Linda, Innocent concludes that Grahame must have committed suicide out of remorse and then himself out of remorse. Lewis doesn't believe in it. It soon turns out that a good friend of Father Jasper, who lives on the estate, was run over by Black. Jasper insists, however, that he only blames himself for his death.

Lewis learns from historian Frances Woodville that Black was interested in Crevecoeur Hall because there is said to be a legendary treasure there. With the help of Black's notes, Lewis and Hathaway are able to identify the place Black believed the treasure was. However, Hathaway knows that until 10 years ago there was no monument, but a simple fountain. Lewis still believes that Black had to die because he was only one step away from a terrible discovery. He also puts Hathaway on leave because he was on a date with the suspect Scarlett.

At Scarlett's engagement party with banker Tarek Shimali, Lewis' employee Hooper intercepts a text message on Hathaway's cell phone, which is turned off. While Hooper contacts Hathaway, Lewis goes to Crevecoeur Hall's summer home in Hathaway's place. There the murderer and domestic worker Hopkiss reveals his plans to him:
Linda Grahame discovered that Lord Augustus Mortmaigne was abusing her daughter Briony and was killed by Hopkiss and hidden in the memorial that Black thought was the treasury. To make the illusion perfect, Hopkiss forced Scarlett to write love letters from Linda to Black. When Black was finally about to open the memorial, Hopkiss killed him too. When Ralph Grahame threatened to expose the fraud, he too died. During the transfer of Hopkiss, Hathaway is shot and the employee Philip Coleman is killed.
